After performances in Melbourne, New York, Boston, Paris, and Phnom Penh, Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia makes its Canadian premiere as part of the Festival Champa. Created by world-renowned filmmaker Rithy Panh and composer Him Sophy, this work is a tribute to Cambodia’s cultural rebirth.

Combining a symphonic composition with traditional Khmer music and a chamber orchestra, the show evokes the tragedy inflicted by the Khmer Rouge while celebrating the resilience and revival of the Cambodian people. The performance will be led by New York-based conductor Andrew Cyr, a Grammy Award winner, accompanied by a local choir and musicians.

Conceived as an immersive ritual, the evening invites the audience to experience both solemnity and lightness, where images, music, voices, and movement blend seamlessly. This work offers a poignant reflection on war and human resilience while honoring Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage.
