In Mama and Frères, he was the great absent figure. Here is his story, in the play that bears his name. Georges is a father of Egyptian origin, an upright and rather conservative man, at times awkward, but loving, funny and deeply endearing.

He watches his children grow up and tries, as best he can, to come to terms with life choices that sometimes challenge his cultural heritage. Little by little, conflicts emerge, but in this imperfect family, the strength of the bonds can withstand anything.

Nathalie Doummar, a leading voice in Quebec dramaturgy, continues the exploration of her family mythology begun with Mama and Frères. The author of more than a dozen plays, including Coco, Sissi and L’amour est un dumpling, she tackles paternal love in all its complexity in Georges, with the humour and sensitivity that are her signature. The result: “a gentle play [...] full of tenderness” (La Presse), brought to life by Rose-Anne Déry’s direction, whose work on Bénévolat was praised by critics and audiences alike. After its success at La Licorne, Georges returns to life at Duceppe from December 2 to 12, 2027, with Nathalie Doummar herself, Neil Elias and Manuel Tadros, whose portrayal of Georges, with his “immense tenderness, relentless integrity, a few quirks, a touch of humour and a genial charm,” is “the beating heart of the show” (Le Devoir). A loving, nuanced portrait of the people who shape us and whom it sometimes takes a lifetime to understand.
