On the 100th anniversary of Miles Davis's birth and in lasting tribute to Wayne Shorter, Miles Smiles – Wayne Shines returns to the stage.

From 1965 to 1968, Davis and Shorter's Second Great Quintet—with Hancock, Carter, and Williams—produced some of the most audacious music of the century. Composer Jean-Nicolas Trottier has taken that legacy further: building original jazz symphonies from Shorter's melodic cells and rhythmic figures—not arrangements, but new compositions in dialogue with the source. Premiered in 2019 at L'Astral and released as a live album in 2023—named best large ensemble album of the year by the Ottawa Citizen—the work returns, revealing an architecture only hinted at in the original recordings.
