Daniel Lanois is a legendary producer, composer, and sonic explorer whose influence spans decades and genres. Born in Hull, Quebec, and raised in a deeply musical family, he began recording in his teens and never looked back. His groundbreaking collaborations with Brian Eno on the Ambient series set new standards in studio experimentation, leading to iconic work with U2 (The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby), Peter Gabriel (So), and Bob Dylan (Oh Mercy). Lanois approaches the studio as an instrument, blending roots music with cutting-edge sound design.
His solo work—like Flesh and Machine and Goodbye to Language—continues to push musical boundaries, fusing pedal steel with ambient textures and classical influences. In 2018, he teamed up with Venetian Snares for a daring electronic album that bridged worlds. His latest project, Heavy Sun, merges soul harmonies with rich instrumental layers, reflecting his ongoing passion for emotional, genre-defying music. As Lanois says, “I operate under the banner of soul music – music that just feels right and comes from a truthful place.
It all started on the outskirts of Berlin in a small chapel, 3 part harmony with Jermaine Holmes on drums and vocals, the mighty Jim Wilson on bass and vocals, Lanois on guitar and vocals. The chapel acoustics were such that the vocals sounded beautiful, they chose to keep their instruments quiet and let the vocals fill the night. More to come from this dynamic configuration in this show!
