Between desert blues, Mandinka traditions, and electronic sounds, a voice rises—powerful, free, and committed. With Dankoroba, Djely Tapa furthers her artistic vision at the crossroads of Malian and Western cultures: past, present, and future.
Both an ambassador of the djeliya tradition and a modern singer, Djely Tapa sings in Malinké, Bambara, Khassonké, and sometimes in French—both locally and internationally. Her intimate yet cosmic performances fluctuate between Malian traditions and Afrofuturism. Her songs carry a message of strength, love, and hope, echoing feminist and social struggles. Born in Mali into an illustrious family of griots, she has been immersed in this centuries-old art since childhood. Her mother is one of Mali’s leading contemporary voices, and her father is a legendary dancer and singer.
Djely Tapa is a Montreal-based singer-songwriter. Her debut solo album, Barokan, produced by Caleb Rimtobaye (AfrotroniX) and Eli Levinson, won the 2020 JUNO Award for World Music Album of the Year. Her second album, Dankoroba, was awarded the 2025 JUNO for Global Music Album of the Year.
