Lute, Friend of Kings

Show
Date

Past event

As the most popular instrument of the Renaissance, the lute captivated audiences with its rich, mellow sound and exotic appearance. The best lutenists were like rock stars, travelling across Europe on tour and performing in royal castles. Even kings and queens played the lute, commissioning pieces for the instrument from the greatest composers of the day.

Four hundred years later, lutenist Madeleine Owen invites you to explore this refined and delicate instrument, looking like an Oriental jewel with an enchanting melodic sound. Sing canons heard at the French court, decode timeless scores unearthed in the castle of Elizabeth I of England, and hear some of King Christian IV of Denmark’s favourite music.
