Step Afrika! is returning to Place des Arts with its all-new show, The Evolution Tour. Celebrating over 30 years of critically acclaimed performances, it promises a true explosion of South African rhythms and movements in a world of breathtaking choreography.
The world’s leading authority on the art of stepping—a powerful percussive dance form in which the body becomes an instrument—, ranked as one of the top 10 African American dance companies in the United States, Step Afrika! is committed to pushing the boundaries of its art with this new show.
Consisting of 18 artists, the troupe expresses itself on stage by blending songs, stories, and humour with its rhythmic dances. Its participatory shows invite audience members to rise out of their seats and move their bodies to the percussive rhythms.
Founded in South Africa in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, the company has since performed in more than 60 countries in addition to being involved in educational programs reaching tens of thousands of young people. The first dance group to be inducted into the National Association for Campus Activities Hall of Fame, it has become a global cultural ambassador and a benchmark in the art of stepping—notably headlining former President Barack Obama’s Black History Month reception.
