The Arts et monde series of shows presented by Place des Arts is back with new destinations to explore!
Montreal, January 27, 2025 – Returning to the venues at Place des Arts in winter 2025, the Arts et monde series offers four vibrant stage experiences inspired by international cultures and artists.
Be part of this journey around the world when you let yourself be carried away by the celestial singing of Ukrainian artist KRUTb, the South African percussion instruments of the American troupe Step Afrika!, the rhythms of Kodo’s traditional Japanese drums in the new show Warabe, and the amalgam of traditional Khmer music with that of a chamber orchestra in the tribute to a resurgent Cambodian culture called Bangsokol.
“This year once again, our Arts et monde series is offering shows that explore a variety of artistic horizons from the four corners of the globe. An invitation to discover a richness that ranges from taiko to African dance.” – Clothilde Cardinal, Director of Programming, Place des Arts

First destination : Ukraine (voice and bandura)
KRUTb
February 14, 2025, Cinquième Salle
Maryna Krut, known artistically as KRUTb, will be taking to a Montreal stage – to a Canadian stage, in fact – for the very first time. The singer with a celestial voice and a virtuoso on the bandura, an instrument emblematic of the Ukrainian folk tradition, will nchant the audience with her moving melodies.
This now internationally recognized star of Ukraine made her true debut asa finalist in the Ukrainian selection for the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest. Audiences have also had a chance to see her in popular TV shows like X-Factor and The Voice of Ukraine.
Second destination: United States (Percussive Dance)
Step Afrika!
February 23, 2025, Théâtre Maisonneuve
For the very first time, the famous dance troupe Step Afrika! will be touching down at Place des Arts to showcase its mythical step dancing. Renowned the world over for its percussive dance and its blend of African sounds, the company has performed in no fewer than 60 countries since its founding in 1994!
The 18 artists will use the stage as a means of expression, merging songs, stories and humor with rhythmic dance. Their unifying energy will have the audience leaving their seats and dancing to the percussion-driven rhythms!
Third destination: Japan (Percussion)
Kodo – Warabe
March 13, 2025, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier
After their acclaimed show Tsuzumi, the collective Kodo – which can be translated as “heartbeat” – returns to Montreal with the eagerly anticipated Warabe!
The new work looks to a classical music repertoire inspired by Japanese tales: the opening number, for example, is a nod to an art form called Shishi, or deer dance, in the purest Japanese tradition. A simple mix of the multiple sounds, expressions, and vibrations of taiko drums, one that evokes a wide range of emotions in audiences. Unique sounds and vibrations that will resound in each and every spectator.
Fourth destination: Cambodia (symphonic composition)
Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia
May 24, 2025, Théâtre Maisonneuve
After moving audiences in Melbourne, New York, Boston, Paris and Phnom Penh, Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia is making its Canadian premiere at Place des Arts.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Cambodian genocide, the world-renowned director Rithy Panh and the composer Him Sophy co-created a tribute to Cambodia’s resurgent culture. Merging a symphonic composition with traditional Khmer music and a chamber orchestra, this work invites the audience to undergo an experience both solemn and light, offering a poignant reflection on war and human resilience while honoring Cambodia’s cultural richness.
