Thrills, Magic, and Mystery This Fall at Place des Arts

In October, Place des Arts is bringing you an eclectic program that celebrates Halloween and other fall festivities. Whether you want to dress up, get spooked, or celebrate rich traditions, the season promises to be a very colourful one.

Darkness and Nostalgia

Film buffs and music lovers looking to soak up the dark atmosphere of October will be well served…

Edward Scissorhands in Concert whisks us back to Tim Burton’s poetic and gothic world in a captivating cine-concert featuring Danny Elfman’s iconic score, performed by a full orchestra. At Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier on October 10.

In an even more macabre vein, you’ll find that the vampire Nosferatu has lost none of his power to terrify, more than a century after having made his first appearance. This 1922 masterpiece of German Expressionism will be shown on the big screen, accompanied by a monumental soundtrack performed live by organist Jason Roberts on the Pierre-Béique Grand Organ. Nosferatu the Vampire Cine-Concert, at the Maison symphonique on October 29.

Magical Dreams and Apparitions

Autumn is also the ideal season for wonder and surprise…

Presented by Les Grands Ballets and choreographed by Guillaume Côté, the new work Midsummer Night Dreams reinvents Shakespeare’s comedic fairytale. Enter a magical world where desire, jealousy, and enchantment intertwine to the sounds of Mendelssohn and Max Richter. At Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier for four performances, from October 29 to 31.

On the theatre stage, see Le fantôme dans la machine, a play by Fanny Britt that skillfully blurs the lines between reality and fiction. A woman sees her brother, who’s

been dead for 29 years… on television! Exploring grief, memory, and parallel universes, this play will be staged at Théâtre Jean-Duceppe from October 28 to November 28.

Fiesta and Costumes

To celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), the Mariachi Herencia de México, with its 14 virtuoso artists, will give a lively, warm, and colourful performance at Théâtre Maisonneuve on November 1st.

And be sure to don your cape and mask for Symphonic Superheroes & Villains. The OSM presents an epic revival of the greatest Hollywood superhero themes, from Batman to The Avengers, at the Maison symphonique on November 5.

Poetry and Enchantment

These captivating sounds are sure to warm up cool October evenings…

First, Ghostly Kisses & the FILMharmonique Orchestra offers a poetic encounter between Margaux Sauvé’s world of dream-pop and the symphonic power of a large orchestra. An evening both introspective and luminous. At the Maison symphonique on October 16.

Then, the legendary Loreena McKennitt celebrates the 30th anniversary of her album The Mask and the Mirror with a virtuosic blend of Celtic, Spanish, and Moroccan influences. Three nights only, at the Maison symphonique, on October 26, 27, and November 2.
