Jazz in all its forms is one of the most vital components of Place des Arts’ programming
Especially for 10 days at the height of summer, when the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal takes over the downtown core and every part of Place des Arts. The FIJM, acclaimed by many as the greatest fest of its kind in the world, welcomes some 3,000 performers from 30 countries to the city each year.

An annual blowout celebration
A well-rounded program featuring dozens of shows year-round, emblematic exponents of the genre—without Jazz, Place des Arts simply wouldn’t be Place des Arts. That’s been true since our earliest days—1968, to be precise, when Satchmo himself, Louis Armstrong, swept Montréal off its feet at Place des Nations, the now-defunct outdoor concert venue. No less than 35,000 people turned out for the free show, a watershed moment in the city’s love affair with Jazz. “What a Wonderful World,” indeed.
