Mathieu David Gagnon has long worked behind the scenes on remarkable projects as an arranger, orchestrator, musical director, and producer.
While continuing to juggle other people's projects, he secretly pursued a personal inspiration and finally unveiled his work, Flore Laurentienne, Volume I in 2019, followed by Volume II in 2022. A strangely natural marriage between string orchestra and analog synthesizers from the 60s and 70s, Flore Laurentienne is an invitation to contemplation.
The albums Flore Laurentienne Volume I and Volume II, released via Costume Records, won over audiences and critics alike, garnering two Félix awards at the 2020 ADISQ Gala and the Best Experimental Album trophy at the GAMIQ that same year. The albums also received several nominations at the ADISQ Gala, the JUNO Awards, and on the long list for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize. The piece Fleuve No. 1 was featured as the opening number for the Chanel fashion show at Paris Fashion Week 2022. 8 tableaux, Flore Laurentienne's latest album, was released on March 1, 2024, on Secret City Records. On this new concept album, the composer, orchestrator, and musician draws inspiration from the works of Jean Paul Riopelle.
