An immersive listening experience inspired by the quiet resilience of moss

Mossbed is an immersive sound installation by paysages studio presented as part of the PHI × Place des Arts partnership. Featuring an original composition by Sébastien Sauvageau, the work invites the public to experience a contemplative listening journey inspired by the sensorial qualities of moss: its slowness, its ability to adapt, and its singular way of inhabiting the world.

At the intersection of sound art, contemporary music, and immersive scenography, Mossbed transforms the exhibition room into a place of contemplation where time seems to slow down. Surrounded by a twenty-minute composition and a minimalist audiovisual environment, audiences are invited to pause, attend to subtle sonic events, and experience a different quality of presence in which moss unfolds in all its multiplicity.

Far from being merely an object of observation, moss becomes here a metaphor, a state of being. This discreet organism feeds on what is suspended in the air, adapts to every environment—from the ordinary to the unexpected—and blends into its surroundings rather than seeking to dominate them. Mossbed translates this intelligence of living systems into a sensitive immersive experience and proposes a mode of listening grounded in attention, slowness, and openness, inviting us, for a few moments, to inhabit the world differently. What does it mean to think-moss, to become-moss? This is the question that animates Boisclair and Sauvageau’s work, nourished by a sense of wonder and an immersion into the science of mosses: bryology.
