An open-air art installation by Maylee Keo — created as part of the exterior envelope restoration work on the Theatre Building — invites visitors to discover the artist’s colourful and playful world on the Place des Arts Esplanade.
Produced by MU, the mural showcases the performing arts and the vibrant energy that brings Place des Arts to life every day.
Stretching nearly 110 linear metres, the mural covers a distance comparable to the height of a 30-storey building laid on its side. A Montréal-based artist, Maylee Keo works in 2D animation and illustration, in addition to creating murals and projections. Through her colourful and playful style, she offers an immersion into the world of Place des Arts, featuring the disciplines that bring the venue to life: music, dance, theatre, opera and festivals.
With the title Place à nous, the artist evokes Place des Arts as an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone. The work also celebrates the everyday life of the Esplanade, with its families, young people, tourists and passersby. Birds, flowers, animals and nods to the site’s iconic architecture enrich this expansive composition, transforming a section of the construction hoarding into an open-air creative space and bringing the performing arts into the public realm.
Young people and families from the neighbouring Habitations Jeanne-Mance also took part in creating the work during a collective painting activity alongside the artist.
