From Beethoven’s ideals to Strauss’s orchestral confidences, this program explores legend, individuality, and creative freedom.

Rafael Payare leads us into an extraordinary musical self-portrait: Ein Heldenleben, a true biopic before its time, where Richard Strauss casts himself as a modern hero. Surrounded by enemies, allies, loves, and triumphs, Strauss paints his world in bold strokes, armed with a blazing orchestra, resplendent brass, and colours of unparalleled richness—extending Beethoven’s cherished theme of heroism. From Beethoven, we hear the Fourth Piano Concerto, a poetic breath that slips past convention to invent its own future. Jaeden Izik-Dzurko, the young Canadian prodigy and winner of the 2022 OSM Competition and the 2024 CMIM, embraces this audacity with radiant clarity.
