From his bedroom window, a middle-aged man watches a magnolia tree bloom. Amid a visit to the doctor, picking out an urn and a walk in the woods with his grandson, he thinks, has doubts and sings. Driven by a quest for something greater than himself, he turns to words and music to make peace with what was and catch a glimpse of what may come next.
With Après on va où? (Where Do We Go From Here?), Michel Rivard continues his exploration of narrative theatre that blends poetry and song, something he began with L'origine de mes espèces (The Origin of My Species), which was restaged at Duceppe in 2019. This deeply personal work, directed by the late Claude Poissant, won three Félix awards at the 2019 Gala de l’ADISQ. This time, the singer-songwriter, guitarist, actor, host and sometime comedian is directed by Marie-Thérèse Fortin. Accompanied by three musicians on stage, he has written a gentle, clear-eyed piece, infused with tenderness and humour, a poignant journey shaped by what transcends us, what connects us and what lifts us up.
